マジカルで特別で、家族みたいに温かい。
NYの写真家チャド・ムーアが切り取る東京の風景
ストリートに植物、友人たち。マンハッタンを拠点とするフォトグラファー、チャド・ムーアが、Ginzamagのために撮り下ろしたカットを公開。自身の“東京観”も語ってもらいました。
- ——Tokyo is by far my favorite place in the world to visit. I say ‘visit’ because I love New York City- its my home, but theres an absolute magic in Tokyo, and Japan in general that is so amazing and simply just exciting to me. You can’t find that feeling anywhere else. Im lucky enough to be able to travel a lot making photographs, and Ive been a lot of very foreign places – at least foreign in relation to where my family is from, Mississippi, and where I grew up in Tampa, Florida, and learned and seen so many beautiful things, but Japan is the only place I’ve ever been where everything is completely different, in the most beautiful way.
- 東京は、旅行先として僕のナンバーワンのお気に入りの街だ。なぜ旅行と限定するのかというと、NYという揺るぎないホームがあるから。一方で東京には、他のどの都市とも違う、魔法の力みたいなものが存在している気がする。もちろん日本は控えめに言っても最高で、刺激的だということが大前提にあるのだけれど、それ以上の何か。東京に滞在しながら写真を撮って過ごすことができる自分は、なんてラッキーなんだろうって、心底思う。僕の家族のルーツはミシシッピーで、育ったのはフロリダのタンパ。そこで“美”に関する色々なことを学んだ。でも日本で経験したことは、僕の予想だとか、経験からくる規定値みたいなものを完全に超えていた。素晴らしく美しい意味でね。
- ——I’ve visited Japan a lot recently; I had an exhibition with my gallery Agnes b. early last year, they had just opened the new space so it was really special, I met so many amazing people- from young photographers, or just people interested in the work, everyone was so excited and welcoming. That trip was really amazing, a lot of my New York friends came out and we just ran around with the Japanese crew. In New York, my family are my friends, and I feel the same for Tokyo…It’s like I have another family there and when we visit it each other, we just picked up where we left off. I was actually supposed to be in Tokyo right now working on a project one of my best friends, Sayaka, who’s Japanese.
- 去年、青山のアニエスベー ギャラリー ブティックで写真展を開いた時は、フォトグラファーからアート好きまで、数え切れないほどの面白い人たちがやってきた。NYの友達たちも顔を出してくれて、ギャラリーのスタッフと気軽に打ち解けていく様子には、グッときたよ。僕にとって、彼らは家族も同然なんだ。だからNYと東京、ロケーションが変わっても全く同じ感覚を味わえたのは新鮮だった。まるであっちにも家族ができたような感じ。その逆もしかりで、実際、東京の友人とはNYでも同じように集まって、遊んだり飲んだりしている。ちなみに、この原稿を書いている今頃、本当だったら東京で親友のSayakaと仕事をしているはずだったんだ。
- ——One thing thats really special to me about Tokyo is also something that’s very special to me about New York City and it’s the community. I feel like as soon as you arrive in the city you’re already hanging out with people you just met, but feel like they’ve been your best friends for years. This past trip I met Kato from BeatCafe and we were instant buddies and share tons of mutual friends. It’s kinda crazy that I had never been there until this trip as we know so many of the same people, but regardless, Beat Cafe ended up being the nightly hang out this past trip. Im excited to be back in Japan as soon as possible.
- 東京が僕にとってこんなにも特別な理由は、NYにも共通しているけれど、コミュニティの存在だと思う。着いたその足で飲みに行って、誰か知らない人たちと、まるで10年来の友達みたいに仲良くなって。前回の滞在中、渋谷のバーbeat cafeで知り合ったKatoは、そんな風にしてできた友人の一人。会った瞬間に打ち解けて、共通の友達が何人もいることも判明して。その数が本当にたくさんだったから、逆に、よくこれまで出会わなかったな、って。そんなこんなで、店には毎晩のように通ったのは言うまでもないね。またいつか、第三の家族が待つ東京に戻れる日を、今から心待ちにしているよ。
PROFILE
Chad Moore
1987年フロリダ州タンパ出身。2008年からNY在住。現在はチャイナタウンを拠点に活動。これまでアムステルダムの『Foam Museum』、パリの 『Galerie&co119』、東京『agnès b. galerie boutique』 などでエキシビションを開催。今回の作品は2019年末に来日時に撮影したもの。
